Can I Work in Australia While My AHPRA Registration Is Pending?
No. Under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law, it is a criminal offence to practise as a medical practitioner in Australia without current registration. This applies even if your application has been submitted and is being assessed. You must have at least provisional registration — not just a receipt of application — before performing any clinical work.
How long does AHPRA take to process an application?
AHPRA states that complete applications for provisional registration are typically assessed within 4–8 weeks of receiving all required documents. The word "complete" is critical: if any document is missing, incorrectly certified, or requires follow-up, the clock does not run.
Common delays:
- Criminal history checks — Australian police checks process quickly; overseas police clearances can take weeks or months depending on the country
- Certified copies — documents must be certified by an approved certifier; AHPRA will not accept uncertified copies
- Supervisor confirmation — AHPRA requires your supervising doctor and practice location to be confirmed before granting provisional registration
- English proficiency — IELTS or OET results must be current (typically within 2 years)
What you can do while waiting
You cannot perform clinical consultations, examine patients, prescribe medications, or act in any medical capacity. You can, however, use the waiting period productively:
- Complete mandatory compliance training — most practices require online modules (infection control, fire safety, mandatory reporting) before your first shift; these take 4–8 hours and can be done from home
- Obtain a Tax File Number (TFN) — apply online with the ATO; essential for employment
- Open an Australian bank account — most major banks allow overseas account opening
- Organise your Medicare provider number application — the AHPRA registration number is required to apply, but you can prepare the application so it submits the same day as registration is granted
- Shadow (informally) — some practices accommodate informal observation of clinical work, but this must be non-clinical and non-remunerative; confirm with the practice's medical indemnity insurer
The planning implication: submit early
The single most effective thing you can do is submit your AHPRA application before you arrive in Australia — ideally 8–12 weeks before your intended start date.
Doctors who do this arrive with provisional registration already granted (or imminent), enabling their first paid clinical shift within days of landing. Doctors who begin the application process after arriving face 4–8 weeks or more of unpaid waiting in Australia.
What to have ready before submitting:
- Certified copies of all medical qualifications (primary degree + any postgraduate degrees)
- Your supervisor's details and written confirmation they will supervise you at a specified practice
- A current police clearance from every country where you have lived for 12+ months in the past 10 years
- English proficiency test results (if required for your nationality)
- Identity documents (passport)
Can I work in a non-clinical capacity?
Legally yes — there is no restriction on working in a non-clinical role while awaiting registration. Administrative, research, or teaching roles that do not involve acting as a medical practitioner are permissible. In practice, most IMGs arrive specifically for clinical employment and this option is rarely relevant.
What about limited registration?
AHPRA offers limited registration categories for specific, supervised purposes — postgraduate training, teaching, research, or public interest. These are not a substitute for provisional registration for general clinical practice. If your circumstances are unusual (e.g. research role at a university), contact AHPRA to determine whether limited registration is appropriate.
The bottom line
Plan your application timeline as carefully as you plan your travel. The 4–8 week processing window is largely outside your control once submitted; what you control is how quickly you submit a complete application.
