Is MICGP Recognised in Australia?
Yes — with an important qualification. MICGP combined with a Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of Specialist Training (CSCST) in General Practice is recognised by the Medical Board of Australia as a Competent Authority qualification. This recognition places Irish GPs on the same fast registration track as UK MRCGP holders, bypassing the AMC examinations entirely.
What is specifically recognised
The MBA recognises MICGP as a Competent Authority qualification when held alongside:
- CSCST (Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of Specialist Training) in General Practice — awarded by the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP) at the end of the GP specialist training scheme
- Current full IMC registration — not provisional, not with conditions
- Recent clinical practice — typically within the last two years
These three together form the qualifying package. MICGP alone, without CSCST, does not qualify.
MICGP vs MICGP through the examination route — a critical distinction
Like MRCGP in the UK, the MICGP credential can be obtained through two distinct routes — and they are not equivalent for Australian registration purposes:
| Route | What it is | Recognised for CA pathway? |
|---|---|---|
| MICGP via ICGP Specialist Training + CSCST | Completion of the ICGP 4-year GP training scheme, including hospital rotations and GP placements, with CSCST awarded at the end | Yes |
| MICGP via examination pathway | MICGP examinations sat outside the ICGP training scheme — no CSCST awarded | No |
If you completed the ICGP GP Specialist Training scheme in Ireland (typically ST1–ST4, two years hospital plus two years GP) and received your CSCST, you hold the qualifying credential. If you obtained MICGP through examinations alone without completing the ICGP training scheme, you do not hold a CSCST and must use the Standard AMC pathway.
If you are unsure which route you used, check your ICGP correspondence for a CSCST award letter. The CSCST is a distinct document separate from MICGP membership confirmation.
MRCGP parity
MICGP+CSCST (Ireland) and MRCGP+CCT (UK) are treated identically by the MBA for CA pathway purposes. An Irish GP with MICGP+CSCST and an Irish GP with MRCGP+CCT (some Irish GPs complete UK training) have the same pathway and the same timeline.
What to check before applying
Before assuming CA pathway eligibility, confirm:
- You hold a CSCST in General Practice from ICGP (check your award letter and ICGP records)
- Your IMC registration is full and current (check the Medical Council register)
- You have practised clinically within the last two years (the MBA assesses recency of practice)
- Your CSCST is in General Practice — specialist training completion in another specialty does not automatically qualify
What the CA pathway means for timeline
Eligible Irish GPs skip AMC Part 1 and Part 2 entirely and move directly to AHPRA application. Total time from submitting a complete AHPRA application to first paid shift in Sydney is typically 8–14 weeks. Total time to general registration is 10–14 months. See the full CA pathway timeline for the stage-by-stage breakdown.
